John H. Smyth Scholarship Fund – Donations

VICKIE WAITSMAN and JOHN SMYTH established a scholarship fund in memory of their son, John H. Smyth, who died suddenly on June 7, 2005, at age 16. Johnny was a 10th grade student at the Julia R. Masterman Laboratory School. Masterman is a Philadelphia public school. Students attend Masterman from all over the city and are admitted based upon academic performance.

The purpose of the Fund is to provide an annual $5,000 scholarship to a member of the Masterman graduating class, beginning with the class of 2006. The students selected will best manifest the characteristics that were embodied in Johnny. Each year the recipient will be someone who:

  • engages everyone, so that no one is excluded from the group or activity;
  • enjoys the friendly competition of play, whether on the soccer field, at a chess table, or at the playground for a pick-up game of basketball;
  • possesses a joie de vivre in all that he or she does;
  • enjoys and shows a real interest in learning, manifested both academically and outside of school;
  • possesses a sense of humor, and can enjoy a laugh at his or her own expense;
  • cares passionately about issues of fairness;
  • cares deeply for family and friends.

The scholarship award may be used by the recipient for the student’s tuition, room and board; costs and expenses related to travel; and/or the purchase of school supplies, books and/or a computer.

The John H. Smyth Scholarship Fund is administered by the Masterman School Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, and donations to the Fund will be tax deductible as charitable donations.
